Democrats just lost in court again.
The Supreme Court rejected their attempt to review their new congressional map.
The Supreme Court left in place the ruling of the Virginia Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court on Friday turned away a long-shot effort by Virginia Democrats to revive a new, voter-approved congressional map they wanted to use in this year’s midterm elections.
The brief decision with no dissents leaves in place a ruling by the Virginia Supreme Court that found legal flaws in the process leading up to the referendum.
The legal fight had fizzled in recent days, with Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger saying Wednesday that the deadline to use a new map in Virginia had expired anyway.
Before the ruling, Democrat Governor Abigail Spanberger had conceded that the old map would be used.
Democrat Governor Abigail Spanberger in Virginia has conceded that the state will be using the old district map in the 2026 midterm elections after the map Democrats tried to push through was struck down by the Virginia Supreme Court.
…
Spanberger made the comment to outlet WTOP that the petition sent to SCOTUS is “important, but when it comes to the execution of elections, no matter the outcome in that case, we will be running our elections beginning next month with early voting on the current maps that we have.”
“What needs to happen is we need to focus on the task at hand, which is winning races in November,” Spanberger added. “I believe, somewhat doggedly, that we will win two to four seats in the House of Representatives. … That is my goal. That is what I know is possible.”
The Virginia Supreme Court ruled against the Democrats, saying their process violated the State Constitution.
The Virginia Supreme Court overturned the results of the state’s redistricting referendum, which voters narrowly approved last month.
Why it matters: The 4-3 ruling upends one of the most closely watched redistricting fights in the country.
It follows months of legal challenges over whether the referendum was unconstitutional.
The big picture: The Friday decision says the amendment process pushed by Democrats violated the state constitution, effectively blocking the effort to redraw congressional maps mid-decade.
Big win for the GOP!
